While Tanaka Hamono is best known for traditional carbon blades, this series shows a very different side of Shigeki Tanaka’s work, modern steel, refined finishing, and a strong focus on precision and balance.
This 150mm Petty is forged around a core of R2 / SG2 powder stainless steel, one of the most advanced blade steels used in Japanese knife making today. Hardened to 63–64 HRC, it offers exceptional edge retention while remaining remarkably stable and consistent in use. The edge takes a very fine polish, holds its sharpness for a long time, and maintains a clean, controlled cutting feel even after extended sessions.
Surrounding the core, 33 layers of stainless damascus are folded and finished to create a flowing, highly detailed pattern that reflects the precision of the forging process. Every line is intentional, every transition carefully controlled this is not decorative damascus, but structural cladding built for performance and durability.
In use, this knife feels light, centered, and extremely agile. At only +-70 grams, the balance sits close to the hand, making the blade disappear during fine work. The grind is thin and clean, optimized for precision rather than brute force, allowing the knife to glide effortlessly through herbs, citrus, garlic, proteins, and delicate prep where control matters most.
The Petty format shines as a true utility blade, ideal for in-hand work, trimming, portioning, and detail cuts where a full chef’s knife would feel excessive. Fast, accurate, and easy to guide, it quickly becomes one of the most used knives in a professional kit.
Finished with an octagonal walnut handle and buffalo horn ferrule, the knife remains elegant, ergonomic, and highly resistant to humidity.
This is not a rustic forge knife.
It’s a modern precision instrument, engineered for sharpness, balance, and long-term performance, and crafted by one of Japan’s most respected contemporary smiths.
