Another beautiful creation by Hatsukokoro who is a collaborative project that brings together some of Japan’s most skilled blacksmiths, sharpeners, and craftsmen. By partnering with renowned artisans from across the country, they’re able to offer knives that deliver exceptional performance and finish at a fair price. While these aren’t budget blades, the value you get in terms of grind quality, heat treatment, and attention to detail often surpasses what you’ll find in much more expensive options.

This particular knife comes from the Ryuhyo Kurozome collection and is handcrafted in Echizen. The blade features a shimmering nickel damascus suminagashi pattern over a deep black Kurozome base. In the right light, the surface sparkles like a distant galaxy scattered with stars—elegant, dark, and captivating. And what’s even more impressive: Yauji doesn’t outsource a single step. He forges, grinds, finishes, and sharpens each blade himself.

Performance-wise, the Ryuhyo line is built with a high-performance SG2 (R2) powdered steel core, hardened to +/- 63 HRC for outstanding edge retention. The blade geometry is ultra-thin, fitting the “laser” category perfectly—ideal for precision slicing with minimal resistance.
